Willow

Responsible, Caring, Fearless & Secure

A very warm welcome to Willow Class! This year is an important academic milestone for some of the children as it marks the final year in Key Stage 1 and, for others, an introduction to KS1 with us working together in a mixed class. There is lots of fun and exciting learning to do this year and I look forward to supporting your child on their journey as we work our way towards Key Stage 2 and progression to the final stage in Key Stage 1.

Our topic this term is Animals and their Habitats, where we will be studying various aspects of the curriculum.  To link with Science, we will look at the different animals and the habitats they live in across the world, identifying similarities and differences and why an animal is suited to a particular habitat.  We will also look at how animals use camouflage to protect themselves in various habitats. Finally, children will have the opportunity to design, make and evaluate their own animal in its habitat using tissue paper and the skill of tearing at the end of the unit.

PE: We will be thinking about dance and learning to change the speed, weight and size of our movements. We will use our bodies to express an idea and move in different ways. We will learn how to make different shapes with our bodies and with others and begin to dance in different formations. For our outdoor PE lessons, we will be learning to demonstrate basic movement and spatial awareness playing a variety of games. We will learn how to move with a ball and send and receive a ball by rolling and throwing.

Please note your child’s PE day is on a Tuesday for this term.

You can help your child by:

  • Spending time practising the weekly spellings sent home each week.
  • Reading with your child each night and writing in their reading record.
  • Returning reading books with reading records every day.
  • Going through the twos, fives and tens timetables with your children if Y2 and counting in 10’s, 5’s and 2’s if Y1.
  • Completing a range of homework tasks.
  • Shopping at 'Asda' and getting rewards in the cash pot for Roehampton Church Forest School (Finishes end of September).
  • Donating resources such as whiteboard pens, glue sticks and boxes of tissues for use in class.

Forest School: We will be commencing forest school in the Autumn term. Please provide your child with waterproof bottoms, coat or an all-in-one and wellington boots.
