Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
By the end of EYFS, children will be able to express themselves effectively. They will be able to use past, present and future forms accurately when talking about events. They will develop their own narrative and explanations by connecting ideas or events. They will listen to stories, accurately anticipating key events and respond to what they hear with relevant comments, questions or actions.
Year 1-6
Children will develop their ability to listen and respond appropriately to adults and peers. They will show that they can ask relevant questions to extend their understanding and knowledge and will be able to articulate and justify their answers, arguments and opinions. Children will be able to give well-structured descriptions, explanations and narratives for different purposes, including expressing their feelings. They will use spoken language to develop understanding through speculating, hypothesising, imagining and exploring ideas. They will participate in discussions, presentations, performances, role play, improvisations and debates, speaking audibly and fluently with an increasing command of Standard English.
